Bold & Italic

  1. Use boldface type for emphasis, but sparingly. Too much bolded text makes the page look disorganized and can be distracting.

  2. Boldface type can also be used to signal terms that appear in the glossary (though this is typically not necessary, and when used, a note must be included explaining it to the reader).

  3. Use italic type for the following:

    • titles of books, journals, magazines, and newspapers

    • titles of acts, regulations, and AER directives, bulletins, and reports, including for their short titles (e.g., Directive 038, OGCR)

    • words in foreign languages that are also not common in English (if it’s in the dictionary, don’t italicize it)

    • emphasis (sparingly)
