Slashes

  1. In general, avoid using slashes. They tend to be ambiguous. In formal writing, it’s better to make the relationship between the two words explicit.

  2. Slashes are best reserved to indicate alternatives—a shorthand for or.

  3. Do not put a space around the slash if both terms are single words. If one or both terms are open compounds (no hyphen), then put a space on either side of the slash.

  4. A slash can also indicate the last part of one year and the first part of the next. (See the Dates and Times section for additional information.)
